Tiger wins in Japan

So Tiger Woods has won his first stroke play title in more than a year, who cares. This victory in Japan is worthless. Perhaps it's an ego booster for Tiger, but overall it means zilch. Who cares about this or any tournament played in Japan? I don't.

Heck, I'm starting to think about all of the turkey I'll be eating in a few days. Which leads me to my next question: If Iraq attacked Turkey from the rear, do you think Greece would help?

Fair go, N3P! Occasional visits to Japan by big names such as Tiger Woods, Darren Clark, Thomas Bjorn etc. are the only way that the majority of Japanese (and foreigners!) living here will get to see these great players in action. The Japanese tour has also been the launching pad for more than a few foreign players' careers - Todd Hamiltion being a recent example.

While many US players may be reluctant to travel outside the US for financial or family reasons, the fact that they are able to make a decent living in the US is a direct result of the popularity of golf worlwide. It wasn't so long ago that the world's top players HAD to travel around the world to make a living.

As for the importance of tournaments in places like Japan, I'll leave the last word to a true legend of the game, Arnold Palmer:

"Playing worldwide is something very essential to being successful."

"If you're not inclined to go out into the world and play against all the world-class golfers on their territory, then your chances of being a world-class golfer aren't as great as they would be if you did that."
