The Champions Tour's first event of the year is the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. Hualalai Golf Course in Ka'upulehu-Kona, Hawaii is hosting the tournament in 2 weeks for the 14th straight year.
What's so exciting (for me at least) about this event is... Competing in their first Champions Tour tournaments is two of my favorite golfers - Fred Couples and Corey Pavin.
Couples a 15 event PGA TOUR winner, and winner of the Masters title in 1992, became eligible for the Champions Tour in early October.
So why do I like Couples so much? Honestly, I love his swing. No matter how much his back hurts - his swing is always smooth... and he has consistently crushed the ball as far as any golfer out there. Yes, there are some young guns out there who out-drive Fred, but lets see them do it as long as he has.
As for Corey Pavin, who has 27 international wins, 15 on the PGA TOUR - including the '95 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills - he turned 50 in November. And another notch in Corey Pavin's belt is that he is going to captain the U.S. team at the 38th Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in Wales this fall.
So why do I like Pavin? Quite frankly, I love watching a guy that's only 5'2" and weighs just 127 pounds spank the ball down the middle every time, and win tournaments. Okay, I know he's really 5'9" and around 155 lbs., but he looks tiny compared to most players.
Heck, the amount of food Craig Stadler eats in a single day weighs more than Corey Pavin's total body weight.
No Three Putts wishes Fred Couples and Corey Pavin good luck on the Champions Tour with the 50-plus crowd. Go get 'em.
